The traditional NFL Pro Bowl has been revamped for the 2022-23 season. The rebranded Pro Bowl Games breathe new life into the longstanding praxis of bringing together the league’s top talent.
The festivities kicked off with a skills competition on Thursday night, which will continue on Sunday and culminate with three flag football games later in the day.
The games will have cumulative scoring, with the winning conference of each skills competition earning three points and the winning conference from each of the first two flag football games earning six points.
The sums will be added together and will be the starting score of the third and final flag football game. The winning conference of that game will be the winners of the Pro Bowl Games.
That’s not just because the festivities are taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, mind you. The league has given the annual competition a facelift, hoping to breathe life into an event that has tended to pass by on the calendar life a gentle breeze.
This year’s plans are likely the league’s most ambitious: eight different skills contests, as well as a 7-on-7 flag football game, spread over two days of competition.
It’s being billed as a true, quantifiable way to mark who is truly the cream of the crop in the NFL. And although it likely will have some kinks to work out, it should be nothing if not unique.

The NFL announced Wednesday the complete rosters for the 2023 Pro Bowl Games, a week-long celebration of player skills featuring an exciting new format that spotlights flag football.
Six NFL teams are sending at least five players to Las Vegas, where the flag football game will be played Feb. 5 at Allegiant Stadium, led by the league-leading Philadelphia Eagles, who boast eight Pro Bowlers (and six starters): wide receiver A.J. Brown, guard Landon Dickerson, quarterback Jalen Hurts, offensive tackle Lane Johnson, center Jason Kelce, pass rusher Haason Reddick, running back Miles Sanders and cornerback Darius Slay.
The Dallas Cowboys (seven), Kansas City Chiefs (seven), Baltimore Ravens (six), San Francisco 49ers (six) and Minnesota Vikings (five) are the other teams with at least five Pro Bowlers.
On Monday, two Pro Bowl players were revealed, including Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who, despite his recent absence due to injury, earned his ninth straight Pro Bowl bid.
